West End Extension

A triangular extension to enjoy all seasons

McInnes Gardner created new and exciting possibilities to this listed building to increase the client's living space. "We saw the opportunity to celebrate the garden by creating a more generous kitchen and dining space that would connect to the garden, bringing light into the core of the house, opening up the ground spaces to flow more freely.

The geometries of this project were quite challenging due to the triangular nature of the plan. It’s a small extension but the success lies in the way that it has opened up the existing rooms, allowing them to become more dynamic and useful spaces in terms of light and views.

The large double-glazed sliding 'floor-to-ceiling' panels, with self-cleaning coating to keep maintenance to a minimum, is central to the design in terms of bringing light into the house. We were able to demonstrate the design to the owners via a 3D model, to present a real sense of daylight, as it changes through the day and the seasons..

The positive impact on the owners’ living experience is out of all proportion to the size of the new addition to their home. It has unlocked the potential of the existing rooms, created more space and now provides a direct link between the house and the outdoors. It means the garden can now be enjoyed all year round.
